On the opposite wall is Shelton’s mural, Midwest Trails. Shelton describes the scene. “This mural shows the hustle and bustle of the station with the arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul’s engine number 520, a coal burner. It is a 4-4-0, which refers to the wheel arrangement from front to back. As was typical of the time, the first car after the coal tender was the mail car. I painted the mural with the idea of its being a play; the train is the backdrop and each individual an actor. I’ll leave the story to the viewer.”
