WWI Summer 2018 Programming Assistants

1-2 volunteers are needed for this summer programming series, which will include an exhibit, genealogy workshop, lecture, and kid's summer workshops.

Volunteers will help research and create the exhibit at the Carnegie, plan activities for the kid's programs, design ads and write short press releases about the programming, and attend and assist with the various events.

The position will start on May 2nd, and expected time commitment is roughly 32 hours a month during May, June, and July, with one busier week (~ 20 hrs) during the kid's workshops. All program activities will take place at the Carnegie Library Museum in Perry, IA.

Ideal volunteers have a love of history, interest in WWI, willingness to meet with and talk to new people, interest in education and working with children, are capable of working independently, and have basic computer skills.

Becoming American Fall 2018 Programming Assistants

2 volunteers are needed for this fall programming series with events in Des Moines and Perry, including 2 exhibits and 7 film screenings and discussions.

Volunteers will help research and create the exhibits at the Carnegie and State Historical Museum, design ads and write short press releases about the programming, design handouts, and attend and assist with the events.

The position will start on May 2nd, and expected time commitment is roughly 32 hours a month during May - August and 8-12 hours a week during September - early November.

Ideal volunteers have a love of history, interest in immigration, willingness to meet and talk with new people, are capable of working independently, and have basic computer skills. Those with experience in graphic design are especially encouraged to volunteer.

Weekend Carnegie Museum Monitors

We have several openings for weekend monitors for the Carnegie Library Museum.

Volunteers operate the museum for 2 hours on a weekend day once a month, opening and closing the building, and giving tours. Tasks include greeting visitors, familiarizing oneself with the museum's collections, exhibits, and Perry history, helping patrons with research on Ancestry.com and the newspaper databases, and being a good ambassador for the Carnegie during and outside of shifts.

Ideal volunteers are interested in history, willing to meet and talk with people, capable of working independently, and are responsible and reliable.

The spirit of volunteerism in Perry is as strong as ever.  FCCT volunteers learn about our town's history and serve as ambassadors for the museum and our organization.  Volunteers are an essential part of making the visitor experiences meaningful and memorable for its visitors.  You can help with activities as diverse as:

  • Helping plan and organize special events and greeting guests
  • Cataloging items and scanning documents and photos
  • Telling your own family’s story
